Sam was born April 2, 1948, in Beeville, Texas to Santos and Dominga (Ochoa) Betancud. He spent his childhood between Texas and Oklahoma. He met his wife Sherry in Crookston MN where he was working the beet harvest. They got married and started their family in Crookston. Sam worked multiple jobs before hiring on at BNSF Railway on September 12, 1978, as a machinist. They moved around a lot before settling in Bridgeport. He loved his dogs MiMi, Pepper, and Pickles. Sam enjoyed working on his classic cars with his kids and grandkids. He loved to travel, and he enjoyed watching Western tv shows and keeping up with politics. He retired from the railroad on June 30, 2012. Sam loved to joke around with his friends and coworkers, he was definitely the instigator.
Sam is survived by his wife of 50 years Sherry, his children Jessie, Samuel, Scotty, Shawn, and Samantha (Michael Weintz). His siblings Alfredo and Benjamin of Texas. Also, his grandchildren and great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Sam in death were his parents Santos and Dominga (Ochoa) Betancud, his daughter Maria (Minga) Betancud Carbajal and his sister Maria (Janie) Betancud.
