A seat on the Box Butte County Board of Commissioners remains vacant after the deadline for applicants was extended.
Box Butte County Commissioner Mike McGinnis, who served in county and state government for eight years tendered his resignation on Dec. 30, 2022, with Commissioners Steve Burke and Brett Ditsch voting unanimously to accept the resignation at their first meeting of the year.
Box Butte County residents who were interested in the position were given until Jan. 31 to submit a letter of interest and resume. According to Box Butte County Clerk Martie Burke, there were only three applicants, sparking a decision to extend the deadline until Feb. 28.
“We interviewed the three applicants that had applied, and after that, we felt like the public wasn’t really aware enough of the opening due to the low number of people that submitted,” said Martie Burke. “So, we decided to extend it out further to see if we could get more interest and exposure to it.”
Martie Burke encouraged people who are interested in filling the vacancy to bring a letter of interest and a resume to the Box Butte County Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. on Feb. 28.
“We’re planning on doing interviews on March 2, and, based on that, we will hopefully make a decision to appoint someone on that day, and then they would be sworn in and ready for the meeting on March 6,” said Burke.
