Seven 3 Pointers in the Third Quarter Powers Chadron Past Bulldogs

A barrage of three point goals by Chadron was enough in their battle with Alliance in boy’s basketball action on Friday. In a match up played in Chadron, the hometown Cardinals sank 10 treys on the night and defeated the Bulldogs 65 to 48. The third period was a big one for the Cards as the hosts made 7 in the quarter and totaled 29 points to take a big lead. Alliance senior Seth Meyring had a hot hand for the Dogs, scoring 26 points and hauling in 12 rebounds to lead the AHS offense. The Bulldogs led by 5 at half but following the huge third by the Cardinals, trailed by 15 heading into the fourth. AHS was able to get within 5 in the final moments of the game but Chadron ended the contest on a 14 to 2 spree in getting the W. The Cards also got the victory in the JV game, downing the Dogs 56 to 53.

Chadron started the action red hot, taking an early 7 to 2 lead. The first 5 points went to the Cards but a hoop by Meyring sliced Chadron’s lead by 3. Following a pair of free throws by the Cardinals, it was Alliance’s turn to shine. Four points by Meyring and a 2 pointer by Bulldog Trevor Zurn gave the guests a brief 8 to 7 lead at the 2 minute stage of the first period. The teams then traded baskets with AHS getting a tally from Meyring. Another 3 by the Cards closed out the first period scoring with Alliance down 12 to 10. The Dogs got the upper hand in period #2. Alliance would outscore Chadron 17 to 10 thanks to 6 points each by Meyring and junior Espen Lanik. A bucket by Zurn knotted the game at 12 in the opening minutes of the second. Down 14 to 12, AHS then made a big run. Two hoops by Meyring along with a 3 by Alliance’s Lexton Salcido and a 2 by Lanik gave the visitors a 21 to 14 lead at the three minute mark. In the final moments, the teams swapped scores with the Bulldogs getting points by Lanik and Meyring. The half closed with a Cards 2 and Alliance in the lead at 27 to 22.

Things started well for the Dogs in the third but quickly went south. A basket by Meyring started the scoring and made the board read Alliance 29 Chadron 22. From there it was all Cardinals. Chadron went on scoring spree, registering 17 straight points to move ahead by 10 at 39 to 29. Three 3 pointers by the hosts during their run made things difficult for AHS. A three point play by Bulldog Jaden Guerra stopped the run but back to back 3 balls by the Cards made the Alliance deficit now stand at 13. The period came to an end with Alliance getting 2 point goals by Peyton Boyer and Meyring and the hosts sinking 2 more threes. After three, Chadron held the advantage at 51 to 36.

Meyring continued his hot shooting in the opening stages of the fourth with a three pointer that sliced the Chadron margin to 12. Another Lanik score ensued as AHS drew closer. With under 6 minutes left to play, Alliance got another Meyring trey and a 2 pointer by the Bulldog forward to get within 5 at 51 to 46. It was as close as the guests would get. Chadron answered with another 3 pointer, a 2 point score, and 2 free throws to surge ahead 58 to 46 at the 2 minute stage of the fourth. Another bucket by Lanik ended the Card run but the contest concluded with the hosts scoring the game’s final 7 tallies. Final Chadron 65 Alliance 48
