This week has been set aside by the National Weather Service to remind all of us what to do when the different kinds of severe weather happen. On Monday, the theme was lightning safety, which is a reminder that if you hear thunder and you are outside, you can be struck. It’s best to go inside and wait a good 30 minutes (with no more lightning) before going outdoors again. Tuesday was the day for tornado safety. Generally during a tornado, you want to be in a strong, sturdy structure and get as low as you possibly can. Stay away from windows and have a way to know when the danger is over. Weather radios are good for that. On Wednesday, the topic was preparedness. Knowing where to go and what to do is key for survival for you and your family. Practicing with your kids on a regular basis is a great idea! This way when a tornado is bearing down, you don’t even think about what to do, you just act. On Thursday, the topic is hail and wind. This is the main cause for severe thunderstorm warnings. Hail and wind can do quite a bit of damage over a widespread area. Friday is flood safety. The number one weather related killer is the flash flood. How strong a flash flood becomes depends on the intensity and duration of rainfall. In just a matter of minutes a flash flood can occur if the rain intensity is strong enough but a flash flood can even happen if rain has been building up in an area.

Forecast discussion for the week ahead:
After a very warm end to the work week, temperatures are going to take a tumble after a cold front rolls through over the weekend. We may see some rain with this front and possibly some snow mixing in overnight. High pressure is expected to build back in next week with will warm us back up.
