Sheldon Statewide Exhibition Opens Soon

CHADRON – Chadron State College will host On the Road Again, an art exhibition related to the open road, in Memorial Hall’s Main Gallery Aug. 31-Sept. 28. The pieces were selected from the collection of Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Hours for the gallery are weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 308-432-6317 for more information or to schedule a weekend or evening gallery visit.

Landscapes play a major role in the exhibition, displaying the beauty of the natural world and artists’ and travelers’ interpretations of their place in it. Roadside attractions and accommodations are common subjects revealing the charm, necessities, and eccentricities of travel. On the Road Again seeks to visualize the significance of the American road. These collected works demonstrate that while everyone’s experience is unique, some sights and sentiments contribute to a collective imagination of the open road.

This year, Sheldon has produced a series of videos that provide a deeper look into eight of the artworks in the exhibition including a painting of western Nebraska ranchland by Scottsbluff artist Audrey Towater. The videos are intended to be a resource for Chadron area educators but can be accessed by the public via the QR code at the exhibition or the link above.

The exhibition is part of Sheldon Statewide, an annual program that circulates works from the museum to multiple venues throughout Nebraska. Since its inception in 1987, the program has taken exhibitions to 25 communities, reaching more than 365,000 people. The Sheldon Statewide series receives funding from Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Nebraska, Rhonda Seacrest, the Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment, and the Sheldon Art Association.
