Sidney Survives Late Surge by Lady Bulldogs

Tensions were high in the late stages of the JV match up between Alliance and Sidney on Monday in girl’s JV action.

Alliance pulled within three midway thru the fourth but it was the Red Raiders hanging on for the victory 34 to 27. The game was played in Alliance. Ahead 27 to 24, the guests scored the game’s next 6 points to take a 33 to 24 lead.

A three by Alliance’s Aubrey Shrewsbury sliced the Dog deficit to 6 but a free throw down the stretch by the visitors ended the game.

Hannah Benzel was the leading scorer for AHS with 9 points while Brianna Brusuelas added 8. Sidney led by 2 at half and at the end of the third and outscored the hosts 13 to 8 in the fourth in getting the win.

AHS won the first quarter, outscoring the visitors 8 to 6. Five early Benzel points helped the Dogs surge ahead by 3. The Dogs then extended their margin with a free throw by Maslin Breen and a basket by Brusuelas. The period closed with a Raider hoop and the Bulldogs up by 2. Momentum then went to the guests in the second as the Red Raiders outscored the Dogs 7 to 3. AHS got a Brusuelas bucket and a free throw by Amora Gonzalez to tie the battle at 11.

Quarter #2 came to a finish with Sidney up by 2 after a pair of free throws.

Both squads tallied 8 points in the third. Benzel led the Alliance O with 4 third quarter points. Scores by Brusuelas and Benzel early on kept the action tight. A deuce by Breen made the game a 3 point affair. AHS then got another score by Benzel to end the period with Alliance down just by 2 21 to 19.

Sidney was able to extend their lead early in the fourth with a three. AHS answered with a 2 by Brusuelas to slice the lead to 3 at the 7 minute mark. The clubs then swapped scores with Sidney getting a hoop and a free throw and Alliance getting a Shrewsbury trey.

But in the end it was the guests pulling away. Sidney scored the game’s next 6 points to go up 9 before another three pointer by Shrewsbury made it a 6 tally affair. The contest closed with a Red Raider win 34 to 27 following another Sidney free throw.
