A last inning rally by the Peltz Co Navy fell short in a legion baseball contest played Saturday in Alliance against Rapid City. The Spartans, who were down 5 to 2 in the final inning, rallied for 2 runs and had the tying run in scoring position before the final out was recorded by the Sliders. Both teams ended the game with 6 each. Leading the offense for the Spartans were Teagan O’Gorman and Tanner Salcido who tallied two hits each. Pitching for the Peltz Co were Israel Garcia and O’Gorman who both went 3 plus innings.
Bats were quiet in the first as both clubs failed to score. Garcia set the guests down in order and had a hit in the bottom of the frame but was left on the bases. Three walks by the Sliders and a fielder’s choice helped Rapid take a 1 to 0 lead in the top of the second. Alliance went 1-2-3 in their attempt and the battle went to the third with the Spartans down 1 to 0. An Alliance double play foiled any plans for the Sliders in the top of inning 3. Meanwhile, in the home half of the third, the Peltz Co tied the game at 1 with one tally. Alliance got on the board when Garcia reached after being hit by a pitch. A single by Salcido advanced Garcia who then scored on an RBI hit by O’Gorman. Rapid then returned the favor as the Sliders recorded a double play of their own to stop the rally. After three innings, the game was knotted at 1.
Inning #4 was scoreless and action moved to the fifth. An RC triple was followed by a double by the visitors as the Sliders went up 2 to 1. No runs were tallied by the Spartans in bottom of the frame. The top of the sixth saw the Sliders increase their margin. Rapid City used a double and an RBI ground out to surge ahead 3 to 1. Alliance answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Hits by Salcido and Carson Stull plus an error by the guests made the score 3 to 2 heading to the final inning.
Rapid kept the pressure on the Navy team in their last at bat. An Alliance miscue along with a pair of doubles by the Sliders made the scoreboard read 5 to 2 heading into the finale. The Peltz Co started their rally with Miguel Galvan reaching base after getting hit by a pitch. Following an out, Salcido got to first after a walk. O’Gorman was next and his single plated Galvan and moved Salcido to third. From there, the Spartan catcher stole home to sliced the Peltz Co deficit to 5 to 4 as O’Gorman advanced as well. The rally unfortunately ended with a pair of Alliance outs and Rapid City getting the 5 to 4 win.
