SNAP Back Group Organizes Donation Program

A group of local citizens has created a donation program available in both Alliance grocery stores, to help feed hungry families and children during the shutdown of SNAP (food stamp) benefits. A large gray tote will be placed at the front of both grocers, where patrons can drop off nonperishable food and personal hygiene items (examples below) to be distributed through the Community Table in Alliance. Look for the “SNAP Back” logo on the totes or ask your cashier. A similar program already exists in Hemingford and among the local dollar stores.

The national news changes daily on the reinstatement of SNAP benefits, but it is unsure when the monies will be flowing again to the food insecure. The program will continue through the end of 2025 and longer, if necessary. It is strongly preferred you shop at the local grocers, using the lists below. But, if you are unable to get out of the house or live out of town, cash donations are welcome and personal shoppers are available. Safeway also has an online shopping service and will place your items, if directed, in the SNAP Back tote.

Feeding the hungry in our community is only one part of the SNAP program. One of the Alliance stores will receive about $2,000 less per day from shoppers who used the EBT card to buy SNAP eligible items. This shutdown will affect the stores and their staff.
