Spartans Drop Opener to Tigers 13 to 5

Big innings in the fourth and fifth powered the Torrington 18 U Tigers past the Peltz Co. Spartan White team 13 to 5 in the season opener played in Alliance on Saturday. The contest was the first game of a double header between the 2 squads. Alliance jumped to an early lead but a 6 run fourth inning by Torrington was followed by a 7 run fifth inning proved too much to overcome. Starting pitcher for the Spartans was Carter Nemnich who pitched into the fourth inning. Also taking the mound for Alliance were Israel Garcia, Jackson Smith, and Carson Stull. Four Spartans had hits-Braeden Clarke, Nason Thompson, Jaxon Poss, and Jaxson Esparza.

Things could not have started any better for Alliance in the first frame. Torrington went scoreless in the top of the inning and the Spartan offense was the aggressor in their turn. With one out, Clarke singled to start a rally. Kobe Strom and Thompson then both walked. After an out, Esparza hit a 2 run double as Alliance took the lead. Poss was next and his single gave the White club a 3 to 0. The inning came to an end with a Torrington error and Alliance out in front 4 to 0. Bats were quiet in the second. In the third, the Petlz Co. got a double play to keep the guests off the scoreboard. Alliance failed to score in the third and the contest went to the fourth with the Spartans ahead 4 to 0.

Unfortunately the wheels started to come off for Alliance in the top of the fourth. A couple of walks by the Tigers started the a big inning. With 2 outs, Torrington got a 2 RBI double to slice their deficit to 2. Two singles by the visitors were next to make the score 4 to 3. The big hit in the inning then ensued as a 2 run triple by the Tigers gave Torrington its first lead at 5 to 4. An Alliance error helped the Tigers surge ahead by 2 before a third out was registered. Bottom of inning #4 saw a mini rally by Alliance. An RBI hit by Thompson closed the gap to 6 to 5. In the last frame, the Tigers put the game away with 7 big runs. A single, a walk, and a pass ball helped Torrington go up 7 to 5. Two more hits and 2 walks were next as Alliance fell behind 10 to 5. Another triple by the guests then cleared the bases and put the Tigers ahead by 8. Down 13 to 5, the Spartan went down in order in their chance in the bottom of the fifth.
