In a very exciting and competitive game, it was the St. Agnes boy’s basketball team downing Hay Springs 48 to 26 in a ball game played in Alliance on Tuesday. The Crusaders now see their record go to 9 and 2 on the season with their sixth straight win. St. Agnes also the victory in the Junior Varsity contest, defeating the Hawks 30 to 23.
Hay Springs struck first and enjoyed the early lead at 2 to 0. St. Agnes then went on a 10 to 0 run to grab the momentum. Points in the run were scored by Crusader Jackson Devlin, Jay Shelmadine, and Caysen Robertson. Shelmadine hit back to back three pointers as SA went ahead. The first period closed with a Hawk three and the Crusaders out in front 10 to 5. SA was again sharp in the second quarter, netting 16 points. Buckets by Alliance’s Tanner Salcido and Devlin put SA up 18 to 5 at the midway through the period. Following a 3 by the Hawks the Crusaders got a trey by Shelmadine to go ahead 21 to 8. The half concluded with a free throw by Hay Springs and Alliance getting 3, ball by Tripp Johnson and hoop by Cisco Cody. At half it was Alliance 26 Hay Springs 11.
St. Agnes would outscore the Hawks 13 to 9 in the third. Another 3 by the Hawks began the scoring, but St. Agnes countered with back to back hoops by Robertson. Down 30 to 14, it was the guests going on a mini 6 to 0 spree to close their gap to 30 to 20 at the three minute mark. St. Agnes answered right back with the period’s final 9 points. Two baskets by Devlin, a goal by Cody, and another Johnson three ended the quarter with SA up 39 to 20. A three by Devlin began the scoring in the final period. Later with the score 42 to 22 the Crusaders sealed the deal with another goal by Devlin and 2 hoops by Trey Carter. Hay Springs scored the final 4 points but it was not enough. Final SA 48 HS 26

Fifteen Devlin points led Alliance’s offense while netting 9 was Shelmadine. Adding 6 each were Robertson and Johnson with Cody, Carter, and Salcido scoring 4 apiece.
In the Junior Varsity game it was the Crusaders taking an early lead and controlling the contest throughout. Once again it was the Hawks scoring first to take a 3 to 0 lead. From there it was Alliance taking charge. Five points by Crusader Grayson Dibrito and Danny Jelinek helped SA take a 5 to 3 advantage. Later in period #1, a basket by Tatum Devlin was followed by another hoop by Jelinek to keep the Crusaders out in front 9 to 3. The quarter closed with a three by Alliance’s Dixon Bair and the Crusaders leading 12 to 3. Both teams would put 6 on the board in the second. St. Agnes would get 2 more goals by Dibrito and another 2 pointer by Devlin to keep their margin. At half SA was ahead 18 to 9.
Six more Dibrito points in the third kept the Hawks at bay. Hay Springs would garner the quarter’s first 4 points to pull within 5 at 18 to 13. But Phoenix Red Nest stopped the run with an Alliance score. It was followed by 4 straight by Dibrito as the Crusader lead grew to 26 to 13. The period ended with another trey by the Hawks and Alliance ahead 26 to 16. In the final 6 minutes it was Hay Springs closing their gap to 26 to 21 with three minutes left. A basket by Red Nest and another goal by Bair helped SA maintain their margin. Final SA 30 HS 23

Five Crusaders got into the book with Dibrito leading the scoring with 12 points. Adding 5 each were Jelinek and Bair while scoring 4 apiece were Devlin and Red Nest.
