Troy Strang was presented with a Quilt of Valor during Saturday’s Veterans Day Parade in Alliance.
Strang served in the US Navy from 1986 to 1990. He served on the USS Ingersol and was homeported in Hawaii.
He was deployed in 1988 on a Show the Flag diplomatic mission. His ship went with the USS New Jersey to South Korea just before the 1988 Olympics and on to Australia as part of a parade of ships in Sydney Harbor during the Australian Bicentennial Celebration.
He served as captain’s cook and duties included formal dinners and receptions on this diplomatic deployment.
Strang’s second deployment was in 1990, serving in the Persian Gulf to support oil tankers through the straits. As mess specialist, he kept 500 sailors fed.
Strang was discharged in 1990.
