Box Butte County rivals Hemingford and Alliance St, Agnes squared off Monday in 2 contests played at the Holy Rosary Parish Center in Alliance. The hometown Crusaders bested the visiting Bobcats in both games. St. Agnes won the varsity battle 48 to 7, limiting Hemingford to just 2 points in the second half. With the victory, SA now sees its record improve to 6 and 2 on the year. Alliance also got the won in the JV ball game, defeating the Cats 30 to 4. The junior varsity squad has a 4 and 4 record for the season.
Eighth graders Maslin Breen and Reese Armstrong helped the Lady Crusaders get off to a fast start in the opening moments of the varsity game. The pair scored all the Alliance’s points in the first quarter as SA took the early lead. Six points by Breen while with 5 by Armstrong aided the Crusaders in leading 11 to 2 after one period of action. Scoring the long Bobcat bucket was Emerson Horstman. In the second, the Academy increased its margin by scoring 8 more points behind 4 more points by Breen and hoops by Armstrong and Penn Vergil. Meanwhile, Hemingford got a hoop by Leah Krebs and a free throw by Horstman. St. Agnes led 19 to 5 at half.
Four goals by Alliance’s Aubree Shrewsbury in the third kept the Cats at bay. In all, the Academy netted 18 points in the quarter to put the contest out of reach. The Alliance defense was especially stout in period #3 as the guests went scoreless. Four more points by Armstrong and Breen plus a goal by Vergil made the score 37 to 5 after three periods of play. In the fourth, free throws by Bobcat Krebs and Kamryn Haas got the visitors on the board. Alliance answered back with three baskets by Armstrong plus a trey and a two pointer by Shrewsbury to maintain their advantage. Final St. Agnes 48 Hemingford 7

Fourteen points by Alliance’s Kale Hulquist powered the Crusaders in the JV contest. Alliance received 4 points each by Hulquist and Delaney Jelinek to surge ahead in the opening minutes. A hoop by Crusader Alexis Shelmadine ensued as the hosts lead 10 to 0 after one period of action. In the second, the Cats got into the scoring column on a bucket by Krebs. For the Academy, SA would tally 8 points in the second period. Four points by Alliance’s Stella Beck led the offense while the Lady Crusaders also got baskets by Hulquist and Jelinek. At halftime, the Alliance lead stood at 18 to 2. Only 2 points were registered in period 3. A goal by Beck made the score 20 to 2 heading to the finale. In the fourth, Hemingford would get a basket by Myriah Reynolds to get the Cats on the board. The Academy responded with 10 tallies in the period thanks to 8 Hulquist points and a score by Beck. St. Agnes played AMS on Saturday at home then will go to Morrill to end their year at the Panhandle Conference tournament.
