Texting 911; When You Can’t Make the Call

By HANNAH GERTH

Did you know that Box Butte County was one of the very first counties in Nebraska to launch

Text-2-911? You may be asking yourself “why would I need to text 911?” but there are many benefits to this feature. You might find yourself in need of emergency help, but are not able to make a voice call–this could be because speaking out loud could put you in danger, you do not want those around you to know you have contacted the police, or you may even have a speech/hearing impairment. While voice calls are preferred, Box Butte County’s “Text-2-911” capabilities allow us to take emergency “calls” via text; all you need to do is type “911” in your recipient box, and send a text. Be prepared to give your location as quickly as possible, if not in your first text; the sooner we know where you are, the sooner we can get to you!

Call when you can; text if you can’t!
