In our school we have approximately 40 students. Each of them participates in projects from livestock (Poultry, Rabbits, Goats, Sheep, Pigs, and Cattle), agriculture class (must be taken for a better understanding of their activity, and speaking. There are sponsorship opportunities available for example, I was sponsored by a young woman from Iowa.
In February I applied for a program called The Lamb Challenge program and I submitted an application, and a three question essay. I was notified in March that my application was approved and in April I would be given a lamb.
In this program you have to write an updated letter to your sponsor every month starting in May to September telling your sponsor how everything is going and also some pictures of your lamb. In September you show the Lamb at the Aksarben Stock Show in Grand Island.
At the stock show you interview with your sponsor, and throughout the months you have the lamb you a complete a record book. This year, including myself there were 18 of us that were given a lamb.
This was a wonderful and learning experience; in fact, in the past eight years of being in 4-H, I have been the only one to not only apply but also receive a lamb. This was a great experience, I encourage for the younger 4-Hers to apply for this program.
Until next time, Rasine.
