United Way of Western Nebraska serving Box Butte and Dawes Counties is fighting hunger in the community. They are highlighting some of their 2021 Food Insecurity Assistance Projects during the month of October.
United Way’s food insecurity projects includes support to seven local programs serving food insecure families in the communities they serve. These programs include three local school district’s weekend Food Backpack programs, local food pantries, soup kitchens, disaster relief and emergency food assistance programs. The support should provide food assistance for several months.
In addition, United Way of Western Nebraska serving Box Butte County partnered with Healthy Blue Nebraska, FNBO and Farmer Credit Services of America to provide a food bag packing/delivery event that was held Oct. 5 at Community Table and an additional event scheduled for late October for Chadron. The event provided non-perishable items, fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and dairy products for 75 local families. A Chadron event is scheduled for later October. Many of the families served during this event were elderly, homebound, low or fixed income households. Delivery service was provided to these families by generous community volunteers.
Sponsors for these food insecurity efforts are listed on cards that were distributed to the distribution partner programs and recipient families. Sponsors include Healthy Blue Nebraska, The Mission Store, Snow-Redfern Foundation, Great Western bank, Black Hills Energy and Consumers Cooperative FCU.
