Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! This is certainly a time of year that having a loved one to snuggle up with can be a great advantage. It can get really cold around here this time of year! Records for the Alliance airport go back to 1996 and while that’s only 29 years of data, the record highs and lows are pretty extreme. The record low for February 14th is 28 degrees BELOW zero, which happened back in 2021. The average temperature on that day was a bone chilling -17 degrees. Brrr! The record high temperature was set back in 1999 when the thermometer got up to 65 degrees. That’s 25 degrees above the average high of 40 degrees. The average low this time of year is still pretty cold, too. It’s only 12 degrees. The coldest high temperature for a day happened just a few years ago in 2021 when the high for the day only reached -5 degrees. Lastly, Valentine’s Day has never been a very snowy day in the panhandle, according to the data. The highest numbers I can find for Alliance and some of the surrounding towns and cities is only 3-4” of snow. I did find a report for Hemingford that recorded 6” of snow back on February 14, 1970. That’s a solid day of snow!

Forecast discussion for the week ahead:
After a fairly mild end to the work week, a shot of cold arctic air is headed our way to kick off the weekend. This colder air will give us a chance for some snow showers late Friday into Saturday, then we dry out again. This arctic blast will be short lived with warmer, near normal temperatures moving back in for next week.
