St. Agnes’ Penn Vergil lit up the scoreboard on Saturday in a home contest against Cody-Kilgore. The seventh grader tossed in 29 points to lead the Crusaders past the Cowgirls 34 to 12 in junior high girl’s basketball action. With the victory, the Academy improves to 5 and 4 for the year. Vergil best scoring period was the second where she scored 12 points. Cody won the second game of the day in the JV match up. Alliance fell to the guests 13 to 11 in a two quarter battle. Top scorer for the junior varsity team was Natalie Mullen who scored 5 points. St. Agnes’ varsity squad went 2 and 1 for the week, downing Scottsbluff and Cody while losing to Lusk.
Vergil accounted for all the points for SA in the first. The Crusaders shut out the Cowgirls 8 to 0 in the opener while Vergil had 3 buckets plus two free throws as the hosts took the early lead. Twelve Vergil tallies in quarter #2 helped the Academy increase its margin. Alliance also got a 2 pointer by Alexis Shelmadine. Cody would score 7 in the period. At half, SA was up 22 to 7.
Three Lady Crusaders would get into the scoring column in the third. Five tallies by Vergil led the way. A bucket by Mullen plus a free throw by Kale Hulquist gave the Academy a nice lead. The visitors had a three in the third plus 2 free throws. With three periods in the book, Alliance had a 30 to 12 advantage. Both side’s defenses were strong in the fourth. Alliance held Cody-Kilgore to just 2 points while St. Agnes would score 4 tallies all by Vergil. Final Alliance 34 Cody-Kilgore 14

Action was even in the nightcap. Cody got the upper hand in the first quarter of the JV affair, outscoring the Crusaders 5 to 4. Alliance got a pair of hoops by Addison Intermill to stay in striking range. Two buckets by Mullen in the second plus a 2 by Sidda Wilcox kept SA close. A free throw by Mullen made it a 13 to11 game in favor of the guests late in the contest. Cody was able to run out the final seconds to hold on for the W.
