Wayne Rolls Past Spartans in Second Game of State Tournament

Day 2 of the Class B state legion tourney was a tough one for the Alliance Senior club. A nine run third inning by Wayne powered Rolling Hills past the Spartans 17 to 3 in a contest played Sunday in Minden. The ball game was called after the top of the fifth due to the run rule. The Peltz Co now has a 27 and 13 mark for the year. Down just 2 to 0 heading to the bottom of the third, the Seniors gave up 9 tallies to go down 11 runs. Alliance countered with 3 runs of their own in the top of the fourth but Wayne responded with 6 more scores to put the contest away. Tony Escamilla had 2 of the Spartans 5 hits. Five Seniors took the mound. Starter Braeden Clarke pitched into the third. Also tossing for Alliance were: Carver Nemnich, Fletcher Moseman, Cody Galles, and Jackson Smith.

Alliance went to bat first and went down 1-2-3. Clarke had a strong beginning on the mound for the Spartans as Post 43 went scoreless in their first attempt. Clarke recorded a strikeout in the frame. Peltz Co bats did come alive in the top of the second with hits by Nason Thompson and Escamilla. Alliance would eventually load the bases but no runs were scored. Post 43 broke thru with 2 tallies in the home half of the second. Wayne used 2 singles along with an error by the Spartans to take the lead. Heading to the third, the Peltz Co trailed 2 to 0.

Inning #3 was when the wheels came off for the Seniors. First the Spartans failed to score in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, the Wayne offense went to work. Rolling Hills plated 9 scores thanks to 6 hits, a couple of walks, and a miscue by the Spartans to go up 11 to 0. Alliance put together a rally in the top of the fourth. Knocks by Escamilla and Nemnich set the table for Jaxson Esparza whose double made it 11 to 2. A free pass by Smith with the bases full pulled the Spartans to within 8 but a double play by Wayne ended the spree.

More problems for the Seniors happened in the bottom of the fourth. Wayne scored 6 times to increase their margin to 17 to 3. Five more hits by Rolling Hills resulted in another big frame for Post 43. Alliance went down quietly in their at bat in the top of the fifth and the contest ended with Wayne getting the 17 to 3 W.
