Western Nebraska Pioneers Battle the Spuds

A weekend review for the Western Nebraska Pioneers: The Pioneers suffered two losses and earned a win over the weekend against the Canyon County Spuds, which brought the Pioneers’ overall record to 21-16.

The Pioneers’ first game was on July 8, when they took on the Spuds Friday night, where the Spuds took the lead and the Pioneers just could not catch them with a final score of Pioneers 4, Spuds 10. The winning pitcher for the night was Spud Seth Summer who threw for 5.1 innings allowing three hits, two runs and striking out seven.

The losing pitcher was Pioneer Adrian Short who threw for 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs while striking out two. The Spuds had fifteen hits compared to the Pioneers’ six. Eric Smelko and Jace Jeremiah both had two hits apiece and led the Pioneers in hits against the Spuds. Despite the Pioneers’ effort they could just not catch the Spuds that Friday night.

The Pioneers’ second game of the weekend was on July 9, where they took on the Spuds, again this time coming up with a win during a close game of Pioneers 5, Spuds 3. The winning pitcher was Jerson Morales who threw for 3.1 innings, allowing three hits two runs and striking out six. The losing pitcher for the night was Spud Jayson Hibbard, who threw for 4.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs striking out two. The Pioneers had eight hits compared to the Spuds’ 11. Despite getting fewer hits than the Spuds, the Pioneers topped the Spuds. Pioneer Jaxson Wall led the Pioneers in hits, getting two for four at bats.

The Pioneers’ final game of the weekend was on July 10, where it had been a very close game and the Spuds ran away with the win, with a final score of Pioneers 3, Spuds 4.

The winning pitcher for the game was Spud Blake McFadden who threw for one inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Mcfadden came out of the bullpen to replace Tristin Tatum who pitched for 7.0 innings allowing eight hits three runs and struck out five. The losing pitcher for the game was Pioneer Paul Panduro who threw for 1.2 innings allowing three hits two runs and struck out one. The Pioneers out hit the Spuds that game with 10 compared to the Spuds’ six, but it wasn’t enough to come up with the win. Alex Zerfass and Jason Luke led the Pioneers in hits with three apiece.
