WNCC Awarded with Two Awards for Veteran Services

Western Nebraska Community College has earned the Military Friendly School designation and named to the Military Times Magazine “Best for Vets” list of colleges for the 2024-2025 academic year.

This marks the 13th time WNCC’s Military & Veterans Affairs Office has been earned the Military Friendly School designation. The recognition is based on a comprehensive review of college investments in serving military and veteran students by Military Friendly and its parent company, VIQTORY.

The Best for Vets list is awarded by Military Times magazine. WNCC has earned this recognition 12 times since 2010. WNCC, along with Central Community College, are the only two-year colleges in Nebraska to earn the award for 2024.

“Receiving Best for Vets and Military Friendly feels great, it means that we are staying true to our purpose of being helpful and driven by offering information and support that may help their educational, personal, and career pathways become easier to achieve,” Mike Millikin, WNCC veterans services program manager, said.

The WNCC Military & Veterans Affairs Office serves as a certification site for Veterans Administration education benefits, and handles assistance with benefits applications, academic advising, college curriculum, and any additional information on veteran services in the region. The Office also hosts the TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program that provides academic, career, and financial assistance to qualified veterans at no cost, as well as organized social and cultural activities.

“Being able to work with veterans and their families doesn’t feel like work because it is something I enjoy doing and I find keeping up with veterans benefits interesting and meaningful,” Millikin, who is also a Marine veteran said. “WNCC gives us the space, support and the means to get things done for veterans and their family members in the community and beyond.”
