St. Agnes Downs Dogs for Eighth Win on the Year

The one-two punch of Lady Crusader Reese Armstrong and Kaitlyn Shannon helped St. Agnes gain a win Saturday in a contest against the Lady Bulldogs of Alliance Middle School. In a matchup of junior high basketball squads it was Armstrong and Shannon accounting for 27 points as the Crusaders defeated AMS 38 to 6. St. Agnes improves to 8 and 2 for the season. The Lady Bulldogs had numerous good looks on the basket but could only manage just 3 buckets. In the late game it was St. Agnes winning the JV game. Playing an AMS seventh grade B/C team the Lady Crusaders downed the Dogs 22 to 4. The game marked the end of the Junior Varsity who ended the year with a 5 and 3 record.

The varsity game was first and saw St. Agnes surge ahead behind four points each by Shannon and Armstrong. Also scoring in the opening period was Hannah Benzel. The Lady Bulldogs got points from Daycin Gibson and Braylin Gibson to keep the game close. After one period of play St. Agnes led 10 to 4. Three free throws by Crusader Maslin Been helped the hosts maintain their margin in the second. Another 2 points by Shannon pushed the AMS deficit to double digits. Meanwhile the SA defense held the Dogs scoreless in the quarter. The teams went to halftime with St. Agnes ahead 15 to 4.

Once again the Crusader defense was stingy in the third period. AMS was shut out in the quarter while the Crusaders put 12 points in the scorebook. Four points each by Shannon and Armstrong along with baskets by Benzel and Aubree Shrewsbury helped SA increase their lead to 27 to 4 heading to the fourth. Ryli Poss would account for the Bulldogs points in the final period while St. Agnes got more scores from Shannon, Armstrong, and Amora Gonzalez. Six fourth period points by Armstrong ended the contest with St. Agnes winning 38 to 6.

Scoring 2 each for the Dogs were Daycin Gibson, Braylin Gibson, and Poss. Armstrong led the offense for the Crusaders with 14 points while tallying 13 was Shannon. Rounding out the scoring for SA were: Benzel with 4, Breen with 3, and 2 from Shrewsbury and Gonzalez.

St. Agnes grabbed the early advantage in the opening moments in the late game of the morning. In the JV contest the Crusaders got 4 early points by Peyton Baker to move ahead. A hoop by Gonzalez finished the scoring in the first period with SA ahead 6 to 0. Both teams would get into the scoring column in the quarter #2. Hannah Chatterton scored for the Lady Bulldogs of AMS while St. Agnes got another hoop by Baker and a bucket by Delaney Jelinek. At half the Crusaders led 10 to 2.

Four more points by Gonzalez in the third increased the Crusader margin. St. Agnes also got baskets by Dawsyn Higgins and Aubrey Dudden in the period as the game went to the fourth with the Lady Crusaders up 18 to 4. Scoring for the Lady Bulldogs in the period was Ruby Kaur. Two point scores by Baker and Gonzalez ended the game with St. Agnes winning 22 to 4.
