Lady Crusaders Take Second at Grant Track Meet Thanks to Three Golds by Vergil

Paced by three first place finishes by Penn Vergil, the Alliance St. Agnes seventh grade girl’s team was the runner up at the Perkins County Spartan Invite track meet held in Grant on Wednesday. Vergil claimed gold in the mile, long jump, and high jump. Chase County was first in the team race with 163 points while the Academy was second with 80 points. Twelve teams took part in the event. Taking first in the pole vault was Alexis Shlemadine. St. Agnes’ 8th grade girl’s team netted 45 points and came in sixth. Chase County was first with 104 points with Dundy County Stratton second with 72 points. The Academy had a pair of first place finishes with Maslin Breen winning the high jump and Reese Armstrong winning first in the triple jump. Breen’s leap of 4’11 broke the school record. In last week’s meet in Chadron, Vergil broke the school record in the mile with a time of 5:56.

Top scorer for the Academy boy’s club was 8th grade Tripp Johnson who won both the mile and 800. Overall, the 8th grade boys ended with 45 points which was good for fourth overall. Winning the boy’s 8th grade division was Chase County who garnered 126 points with Garden County second with 69 points. Chase County also won on the 7th grade boy’s side with 140 points while Perkins County was second with 75 points. The Academy seventh graders scored 28 points which was good for 7th place. St. Agnes was especially strong in the pole vault, finishing second, fourth, and fifth. Tatum Devlin was second, Tee Johnson was fourth, and Ashton Weingart was fifth.
