Navy Team Sinks Torrington with Late Inning Rally

Seven runs in the top of the final inning propelled the Alliance Peltz Co Navy club past Torrington 8 to 7 in legion baseball played Wednesday night in Torrington. The contest was the first game of a twin bill between the 2 rivals. The Spartans were in a big hole, heading into their final at bat. Alliance was behind 7 to 1 before a big rally gave them the victory. Carson Stull, the Spartan starter, went 5 innings and struck out 2. Pitching the final frame was Jayden Garcia. Teagan O’Gorman paced the Spartan offense with a pair of hits including the game winner in the sixth.

Inning #1 had the Spartans go down in order while the Tigers tallied one run following a couple of errors and a walk to surge out in front 1 to 0. The same formula was used in the second. Alliance went scoreless with the Tigers adding a run to their margin. Three hits by the hosts made the score 2 to 0. A double play turned by the Spartans stopped the bleeding and the game went to the third with Alliance down 2 to 0.

Torrington then used a double play of their own in the top of the third to ruin a Spartan rally. Four runs were then plated by the Tigers in the home half of the frame. Torrington increased its lead to 6 to 0 by using 5 hits plus a wild pitch and a passed ball to cushion their advantage. Alliance’s offense would come alive in top of inning 4. A double by Casyn Nelson started the mini rally. Israel Garcia then singled that moved Nelson into scoring position. Nelson then scored following a miscue by the Tigers as the Peltz Co sliced their deficit to 6 to 1. Torrington responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. A walk, an Alliance error, and an RBI ground out made the scoreboard read Torrington 7 Alliance 1 after 5 innings of play.

O’Gorman would come up big for Alliance in their last at bat. The Spartan shortstop started the rally with a single and advanced following an error by the Tigers. Garcia was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Stull. The Peltz Co pitcher was also struck by a pitch, making the score 7 to 2. Another miscue by the Tigers ensued as the Peltz Co deficit now stood at 7 to 3. Reese Muhr was next and his RBI walk got Alliance to within 3. An RBI single by Spartan Miguel Galvan then made the scorebook read Torrington 7 Alliance 5, setting the stage for O’Gorman. The Spartan was up for the challenge as his single plus a Tiger error cleared the bases. Another double play by Alliance in the bottom of the inning was key as the Peltz Co hung on for the 8 to 7 win.
