BBGH Board of Trustees Hears Updates on Measles Case, MRI Upgrade, and Playschool Improvements

Box Butte General Hospital Board of Trustees met on May 27, 2025, in the Alliance Room to discuss major developments including an upgraded MRI system, a lab fair, and expanded services at the Building Blocks Playschool. A recent regional measles case was also discussed. Credentialing requests were approved along with the consent calendar and financial report.

Building Blocks Play School Improves Playground and Extends Hours

Building Blocks Playschool Director Shannon Seidler informed the Board of several exciting updates at the playschool. Starting June 1, operating hours will extend to 6 a.m.- 6:30 p.m., and eventually to 7 p.m. as they make an amendment to their license. Thanks to a generous donation from Dustin White Irrigation to the Box Butte General Health Foundation, the playschool’s children received brand-new, age-appropriate playground equipment. A storage unit, funded through the Six Pence Grant Program, has also been installed for outdoor equipment. Seidler noted strong participation in the recent the parent-teacher check-ins and survey feedback, which will guide future improvements. After hosting a “Tea-Time with Moms” event, Seidler and the staff are also looking forward to a “Tee-Time with Dads” for the families. A graduation ceremony for the children who will be attending Kindergarten next school year is set for August 7 at 5:30 p.m.

New MRI Machine Brings Top Technology to the Panhandle

Chief Operations Officer Gabe Behling announced the successful installation of the Magnetom Sola MRI Machine. The Diagnostic Imaging team reported immediate efficiencies including better imaging and decreased screening time. The team hosted an open-house on May 28 including a ribbon cutting by the Alliance Chamber of Commerce and a presentation to help educate providers and the public on the many benefits of the new machine. Behling also shared that a Lab Fair hosted by BBGH and Panhandle Public Health District will take place on Wednesday, June 4 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Alliance Room. Lab testing and immunizations (provided by PPHD) will be available.

Staff Reports

Chief Medical Officer Brian Shelmadine informed the Board of a recently confirmed measles case in Sheridan County. Infection Prevention Specialist Amanda Sabo noted that BBGH continues to monitor the situation closely and promote vaccination awareness. Dr. Shelmadine also reported that the first revision of the Medical Staff Bylaws has been recommended, and that physician recruitment remains a top priority. Chief Nursing Officer Erica Lauder reported to the Board that departments have initiated performance improvement projects and she plans to keep the Board updated on the progress.

Employee Recognition

The Employee of the Month for May, the Wellness Center Fitness Attendant Janine Iossi, was recognized at the meeting. The Board was also introduced to new employees including Diagnostic Imaging Clerk Misty Brown, Controller Jody Kohl, and Teacher Assistant Aleeanna DeCosta Connolly.

The meeting entered an executive session 1:10 p.m. The next board meeting is set for June 30, 2025, at noon in the Alliance Room. The public is welcome to attend.
