Rams Roll Past Crusaders

Big time rivals St. Agnes and Crawford collided in Crawford on Monday in Junior High Girl’s basketball action. It was a tough trip for the Crusaders. Crawford took both contests against the Academy. The Rams raced past the Crusader varsity squad 36 to 12 and bested the Alliance JV club 22 to 2. With the loss, the Lady Crusader varsity team falls to 1 and 2 while the JVs dropped to 2 and 1 for the year. The hosts outscored SA 9 to 1 in the second period of the varsity affair and were never threaten. Crawford jumped to a big lead in the junior varsity match up in getting the victory.

St. Agnes had several good looks in the JV game but nothing fell. Crawford scored 2 baskets in the first and held a 4 to 0 margin after the opening 6 minutes. The trend continued in the second period with the Rams increasing their advantage to 8 to 0 at halftime. Six more points by the hosts in the third put the contest away. Heading to the fourth, St. Agnes trailed 14 to 0. Eight straight tallies by the Lady Rams is how the final quarter began. Action in the late varsity game began with a free throw by Alliance’s Alexis Shelmadine which gave the visitors their only lead of the battle at 1 to 0. Four consecutive tallies by the hosts ensued as the Rams took the lead at 4 to 1. At the 3 minutes mark, a bucket by Crusader Kale Hulquist sliced the Alliance deficit to 4 to 3. The next 6 points would then come from Crawford that made the score read Crawford 10 Alliance 3 with under 2 minutes left in the period. A Hulquist free throw stopped the spree and the quarter came to an end with another score by the Rams. After 6 minutes of play, St. Agnes was behind 12 to 4.

Quarter #2 was a big one for the hosts. Crawford put 9 points into the scoring column while holding the guests to just one. Down 14 to 4, another good charity stripe shot by Hulquist made it 14 to 5. But it was as close as the Crusaders would get. A three pointer by the Rams was followed by 2 two pointers. At half, Alliance was down 21 to 5.

A goal by Hulquist is how the third started. Unfortunately, for the Lady Crusaders it was their lone tally on the period. Up 21 to 7, Crawford scored the period’s last 8 points to take a 29 to 7 lead heading to the fourth. Action was fairly even in the last quarter with the Rams scoring 7 and the Academy netting 5 points. A free throw by Alliance’s Penn Vergil made the score 30 to 8. The hosts continued their fine play midway through the fourth with 6 straight to increase their margin to 36 to 8 with under 3 minutes to play. Alliance countered with one last surge. The guests got back to back scores from the Intermill sisters to finish the contest. Paisley Intermill scored first and it was followed by a bucket by Addison Intermill and the affair came to a close with the Rams getting the win 36 to 12.
