Sioux County was the site Monday for the girl’s junior high PanHandle conference basketball tournament. St. Agnes opened the day with a contest with Cody. The Academy roared to a big first quarter lead and defeated the Cowgirls 31 to 16 to advance to the semi finals. Nine teams are competing in the event. Leading the Crusaders in scoring was Penn Vergil who tallied 15 points. The contest was a rematch of a game played in Alliance on December 6 in which the Lady Crusaders also got the win 32 to 14.
Four Crusaders got into the scoring column in the first as the Academy took control. Early points by Paisley Intermill and Kale Hulquist made it 3 to 0. Five straight by Vergil followed that put the Academy ahead by 8.. The first closed with a Cody basket and one from Alliance’s Alexis Shelmadine. After one period of action, St. Agnes held a 10 to 2 advantage.
Period #2 had Alliance netting 9 points and the Cowgirls scoring 6. A hoop by Cody early made it 10 to 4. Alliance answered back with a deuce by Hulquist. Following a basket by the Cowgirls, St. Agnes scored 5 in a row to surge ahead 17 to 6. Netting points for the Crusaders during the spree were: Addison Intermill, Hulquist, and Vergil. Both teams scored in the final moments of the half. A hoop by Hulquist ended the half with the Academy up 19 to 8.
Eight tallies by Vergil in the third put the contest away. Overall, the Academy would outscore Cody 10 to 2 in the third to gain a comfortable margin. Four quick points by Vergil and a Shelmadine two made it 25 to 8 midway through the quarter. 2 more hoops by Vergil ensued as the Cody-Kilgore deficit grew to 29 to 8. Quarter three concluded with a Cowgirl score and SA ahead 29 to 10. In the finale, Alliance was outscored 6 to 2. The Academy would get a deuce by Paisley Intermill and take the win 31 to 16.
