Five RBI Effort by Thompson Helps Seniors Get by Westco

Baseball play on Friday had Alliance taking on the Westco Zephyrs. In a thriller, it was the Peltz Co getting the win over Scottsbluff 9 to 8. The Spartans got a big night from Nason Thompson who slugged a grand slam and ended with 5 runs batted in. Alliance finished with 11 hits with Jaxon Poss leading the way with 3. Pitching for the Seniors was Braeden Clarke and Lexton Salcido. Down 8 to 4 heading into the fifth, the Seniors plated 5 in their last 3 innings to earn the victory.

Westco won the opening frame with a run in the bottom of the first. The Spartans got a hit from Espen Lanik in the top of the inning but no runs. Using two walks and 2 singles, the Zephyrs surged ahead 1 to 0 after one inning of action. In the second, a grand slam by Thompson gave Alliance a 3 run cushion. Poss had a knock in the frame. The lead didn’t last. Scottsbluff roared back with 7 runs in the second to take a 8 to 4 advantage. Six hits by Westco put the Peltz Co deficit at 4.

Innings three and fourth were scoreless frames for both clubs. Alliance got hits from Carver Nemnich and Jaxson Esparza in the third and another single by Poss in the fourth but all the runners were left on the bases. The comeback began in the fifth as the Peltz Co pushed 2 across. RBI hits by Esparza and Kobe Strom made it 8 to 6. Meanwhile, Salcido’s good pitching kept the Zephyrs off the board. In the sixth, the Spartans closed to within one. Poss had a hit and scored on an error by Westco. Heading to the seventh, the Seniors were down 8 to 7.

Strom began the finale by reaching after getting hit by a pitch. Tony Escamilla was next and his single advanced Strom. The contest was then tied after an rbi hit by Thompson. Alliance’s final tally then came after a wild pitch. Up 9 to 8, the Seniors held the Zephyrs scoreless in their last at bat. Final Spartans 9. Zephyrs 8
