Hawks Soar Past Seniors

Most of the time a team that scores 13 runs on 17 hits is going to be victorious. Not the case on Sunday when the Alliance Seniors fell to Cheyenne 15 to 13 in baseball action played in Gering. The Peltz Co gave up 12 runs in the top of the fourth and were never able to recover. Down 15 to 6 in the fifth, the Spartans rallied to get close but fell just short. Five Seniors pitched. They were starter Espen Lanik and relievers Fletcher Moseman, EJ Garcia, Miguel Galvan, and Teagen O’Gorman. At the plate, Alliance was lead by Tony Escamilla and Kobe Strom who ended with 3 hits each. The Seniors now have a record of 9 and 3 on the season.

Pitching was dominant in the first three frames. Lanik had 2 strikeouts early and the Spartans took a 1 to 0 lead on hits from Escamilla and Strom. No tallies in the second. In the third, Alliance kept Post 6 off the board by turning a double play. The Peltz Co received knocks from Escamilla and Lanik in the bottom of the third but both runners were left on the bases. After three innings of action, the Spartans were up 1 to 0.

Things went the way of Cheyenne in the fourth. The Hawks plated 12 runs using 11 hits, a walk, a hit batter, and an RBI groundout. Alliance also had success in the inning 4. The Peltz Co pushed 5 across. Hits from Strom, Lexton Salcido, Escamilla, and Lanik made it a 12 to 6 ball game heading into the fifth.

Cheyenne extended its advantage in the top of frame five. Post 6 scored 3 times to surge ahead by 9. No quit in the Spartans though. Alliance tallied 4 to close within 5 at 15 to 10. The scoring started with knocks by Jaxson Esparza, Creighton Fritzler, and Jaxon Poss. An RBI hit by Mike Johnson and a wild pitch made it 15 to 8. The Peltz Co then got a 2 run hit by Salcido to end the scoring. In the top of the sixth , Cheyenne failed to get in the scorebook. Three more Senior tallies got the Spartans close. Hits from Strom and Esparza set the table for Fritzler and Johnson who both delivered rbi hits. Unfortunately, the Seniors would get no closer as the Hawks held on for the 15 to 13 victory.
