Four squads battled in Chadron over the weekend. For the Alliance Spuds, their first game was against the hosts. Chadron scored three times in their final at bat to rally past Alliance 12 to 11. The Spuds had 7 hits with Luke Clarke as the leader with 2. Three hurlers took the mound. They were starter Landon Schroth, and relief pitchers Jack Freiberger, and Leo Hager.
Both teams scored in every frame. Alliance got one in the top of the first with a walk by Clarke and a wild pitch. Down 1 to 0, the Cards scored twice in their first inning attempt. The Spuds retook the lead in the second thanks to knocks by Nikki Escamilla and Jack Sautter. Three scores in the home half then gave the hosts a 5 to 3 after two innings of action.
Alliance had their best inning offensively in the third. Using a couple of hits and a few Chadron errors, the Spuds plated 5 runs.
Doubles by Clarke and Jack Freiberger along with an rbi single by Hager tied the game at 5. A pair of wild pitches plus a miscue by the Cardinals made it 8 to 5. Chadron scored twice in the bottom of the inning and the battle went to the fourth with Alliance up by 1.
Another hit by Clarke began action in inning #4. He then scored the Spud’s ninth tally after an RBI groundout by Hager. The hosts came back with 2 in the home half. Knotted at 9, Alliance surged ahead with 2 more in the top of the fifth. Grady Mracek walked and crossed the plate after an RBI knock by Jensen Freiberger. Alliance added to their advantage when Freiberger scored on a wild pitch. Behind by 2, the Cards rallied. A two run double completed the comeback.
