The local telephone company is now in a position to supply all requests for telephones, having just received another shipment of twenty five instruments. This it is believed will supply the demand, but if not, an extension of the switchboard will be made and other new phones ordered. Charlie Chaplin, the favorite of both young and old Imperial patrons, will feature in “The Vagabond” at the popular show house this evening. This is one of Chaplin’s best releases and is full of his special humor. “Mutt and Jeff” the Bud Fisher comedy cartoon, will also be included in tonight’s bill.

Five women and four men were arrested and a quantity of hootch was seized by local officers in a big raid on the Rogers rooming house, over the A. D. Rogers grocery store, about 11:30 o’clock last night.

Final approval by state WPA officials has been given plans for a project asked by the city, under which it is proposed to bring all of the unpaved alleys in Alliance to proper grade and to surface them with gravel. It was believed at the city hall yesterday that the project would probably occupy a crew of about 30 laborers during the entire fall season.

A perfect flying day, a crowd of 2500, a dozen visiting ships, and 5-cent refreshments all combined to make Alliance air show an outstanding success Sunday. Under the auspices of Alliance Rodeo association the nine-event air program went smoothly off without a single hitch or mishap.

The city council is canvassing the business men of Alliance for their opinion on whether or not the city should extend its utilities beyond the corporate limits. The consensus of opinion seems to be that these are tax-supported services and should be made available on to those areas that pay the higher city taxes.

The largest airplane in actual production set down at the Alliance Municipal Airport Monday because of poor flying weather. The giant Douglas C-124 Globemaster II resumed its flight to Rapid City, S.D. shortly after noon Monday. Captain Frank C. Robertson, pilot, said the C-124 was a “blow up” version of the C-74 which is a “blow up” version of the C-54.

The Alliance Ground Observer Corps soon will have a home to call its own. A glass-walled “hutch” is being erected on top of the city pumping station on West Sixth Street southwest of the National Guard Armory. When completed, it will have electric heating, subdued lighting and a telephone.

The Alliance Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7:30 tonight to approve plans for the new Community Building addition to the Junior High School. Voters here approved a bond issue of $250,000 on May 16 for the addition, which will include four classrooms as well as the gym-auditorium.

Hemingford Eyes Housing Project For Aged People: The Town Board is considering the appointing of a Housing Authority to prepare a plan for a federal project here to provide low rent housing for aged people. Such a plan would be subject to a local election.

A panel of 12 jurors was selected in District Court here today in the case of the Isham Cattle Company vs Ralph O. and Celia E. Wiggins. The suit filed by the Isham Cattle Co. alleges breach of contract by Wiggins and asks for money judgment in the amount of $8.850 plus the costs of the suit.

Since Thursday night the city of Alliance has been a certified member of the Community Clean System, or CCS, one of 225 cities across the nation that has declared war on trash.

Alliance Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kevin Horn, 27, started his new position today. Horn takes over the position which has been vacant for 10 months. Horn, originally from Valparaiso, Neb., comes to Alliance from Cozad radio stations KAMI (AM) and KOOC (FM) where he was news director, sports announcer, and did commercial production for five years.

But when Ann-Maree Blanch, 15, of Mendooran, New South Wales, Australia, arrived at the Scottsbluff Airport, she felt right at home. Ann-Maree will be spending one semester in Alliance, living with Pat and DeDe Przymus and attending Alliance High School.

The Alliance Area Family YMCA secured funding for a new “Teen Leadership” program yesterday, with the donation of $2,000 from Alliance Pamida and the Pamida Foundation. Sue Gies, Alliance YMCA executive director and coordinator for the program, described the addition as a way to “show what there is ‘to do’ all year in Alliance.”
