Top 10 ranked and Preseason Western Conference favorites Gering flexed their muscles on Thursday in volleyball matches against Alliance. In games played in Alliance, the visitors took all three to begin the year. Alliance fell 25 14
25 10 and 25 16 in the varsity affair. Gering also got the win in the JV battle in 2 sets and won the Reserve contest where the guests won all three sets.
Play started with the reserve game. Gering took down the hosts 25 6
25 4 and 15 6. Next up was the Junior Varsity match. Alliance put up a fight but fell 25 15 26 24. Set one of the varsity showdown was even early. Tied at 9, G town went on a 9 to 1 run to pull away. Alliance got an early kill from Olivia Krejci and a block by Ryli Poss to stay in the hunt. A pair of Maslin Breen points along with 2 kills by Poss knotted the game at 9. The big spree by Gering then ensued as the visitors went up 18 to 10. Three plays by Breen stopped the spurt with the Bulldogs closing to within 6 at 19 to 13. Down the stretch, it was Gering making the plays in getting the victory. A late Krejci kill was the lone Alliance highlight. First set went to the guests 25 14
Set #2 was a rough one for the hosts. Gering surged ahead 13 to 3 to maintain the momentum. Alliance would get kills by Krejci and Brooke Bailey but it wasn’t enough. Two Poss points later in the set helped AHS close to 16 to 9. Set 2 came to an end with Gering going on another big run. The visitors outscored Alliance 9 to 1 and took the set 25 10.
Gering continued their strong play in set 3. Tied at 5, the visiting Bulldogs went on a 7 to 1 spree to move ahead 12 to 6. Kills by Kaitlyn Shannon and Poss paced the AHS offense. Two more ace spikes by Breen ensued as Alliance closed to 14 to 9. Down 8, the hosts would get a kill and a point to Poss to give them hope. Gering would then finish the job by outscoring Alliance 4 to 1 and taking the set 25 to 16.
