Prayers were answered for Scottsbluff on Monday in a JV football contest in Alliance. A 32 yard TD pass in the final seconds carried the Bearcats past the Dogs 21 to 14 in a thriller played at Bulldog Stadium. AHS had a 14 to 13 lead but a Hail Mary was completed for a TD with 2 seconds remaining in the affair. Down 14 to 7 in the 4th period, the guests scored but failed on the PAT as the Bulldogs held on to the lead. The Bluffs then won the battle later in the quarter.
An early sack by Bulldog Mason Winter got the visitors off the field on their opening drive. Alliance had to punt of their first possession, giving the Cats good field position. At the 2:20 mark of the first period, the Bearcats scored on a 2 yard TD run. The extra point kick was good and the guests led 7 to 0. AHS answered right back with a strong drive to end the period. Passes from Tripp Johnson to Winter, Tanner Salcido, and Dan Pfannenstiel finished the quarter with the Dogs on the move.
AHS would then take the lead at the 9:15 mark. A 12 yard pass from Johnson to Salcido got the hosts on the scoreboard. Back Jett Childers plowed in for the extra point, giving the Dogs the lead at 8 to 7. AHS defense remained stout throughout the second with tackles for losses recorded by Colter Tolstedt and Pfannenstiel. A pick by Grant Bloyd also denied the guests any points. The half came to a close with another big pass from Johnson to Winter but no more tallies. Alliance led 8 to 7 at half.
Big plays by the Dogs is how the third began. Salcido return the kickoff 30 yards to give AHS nice field position. From there, Back Mykey Valdovinos raced 60 yards for Alliance’s second score. It came at the 9:42 mark of the second half. The PAT was no good. Using a tough ground game, it the Bluffs getting on the board next. A three yard TD run with 5 minutes left in the period cut the SB deficit to 1 at 14 to 13. The point after was no good. Both clubs were turned away on their next drives and the period ended with AHS up by 1.
Freshman Enzo Kappius had a QB sack early in the fourth as the Dogs maintain their advantage. Unfortunately, the Bluffs’ Defense was also stout with the hosts failing to score. AHS would recover a fumble late in the contest to stop a Bearcat series. Valdovinos then scampered 20 yards in the final minutes as the Dogs were looking at running out the final seconds. The drive would stall and the hosts were forced to punt. Starting at the 32, the Bluffs went to their passing and a TD strike was good with 2 seconds remaining. SB tacked on the point after and then stopped the Dogs on the ensuing kick return.
