Governor Pillen issued two temporary executive orders to support farmers, ranchers, and agricultural transporters facing diesel shortages and rising fuel costs during the harvest season. The first order permits highway-registered vehicles to use, sell, or possess untaxed dyed diesel without state penalties and provides refunds for specific diesel taxes incurred during the transport of seasonal crops and livestock. The second order allows vehicles carrying seasonal agricultural products and livestock to operate up to 25% above legal weight limits without requiring additional permits or fees.
These efforts to support our agricultural industry align with the broader focus on economic growth and workforce development discussed at the Governor’s Summit in Kearney, Nebraska, which I attended this week. The conference emphasized the importance of investing in young Nebraskans and developing local talent to support the state’s continued growth. Presented data demonstrated positive net domestic migration and overall population growth, while speakers discussed the essential roles of education, career expansion, capital investment, and community development in sustaining this momentum.
Continuing our focus on effective governance, I also participated in the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) Policy Summit in Nebraska City. The event examined state policy frameworks, Medicaid administration, and anti-fraud initiatives. Sessions provided structural analyses of Medicaid’s impact on Nebraska, outlined administrative strategies to address bureaucratic delays and fiscal note evaluations, and detailed practical measures to prevent financial improprieties. The summit concluded with a federal policy update from Director Darcie Johnston.
Looking to the 2027 Legislative session, the Appropriations Committee will meet on October 9, 2026, to review interim study proposals from Senators Spivey and Anderson regarding child welfare and juvenile justice funding, as well as state appropriations to non-profits.
