Ahovissi to Perform at PAC

The Alliance Arts Council is sponsoring a production by Charles Ahovissi on Friday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center.

Ahovissi is a professional dancer, drummer, performer, choreographer and costume designer originally from Benin, West Africa. The title of his performance is “Celebrate Africa.”

Since 1986, Charles has toured the world as a member of the Ballet National of Benin, performing and teaching traditional African dance and drumming. Now residing in Omaha, Charles wants to share his knowledge and love of Africa through traditional dancing and drumming to foster better understanding of Africa’s diverse and beautiful cultures.

Charles is the founder of African Culture Connection which was one of 12 programs chosen from over 350 nominated to receive the 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. He received this award from First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House on Nov. 19, 2012.

Ahovissi will be conducting a residency in Alliance fourth grade classrooms the week of Jan. 18-22 and these residency students will have an opportunity to briefly join him on stage prior to the “Celebrate Africa” program.
