Alliance Sees Coldest Month in History

A winter storm passing through the region that originated in the Northern Rockies brought with it a blast of cold temperatures.

Richard Emanuel, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Wyo., said the storm dropped between 8-12 inches of snow in Box Butte County over the weekend. He said the winter storm has moved into New Mexico.

“As it passed by, it had a good arctic surge with it,” said Emanuel. “It had a nice setup for a widespread snows across the area.”

With temperatures dropping to -14 degrees in Alliance early Tuesday morning, Emanuel said this has been the coldest October on record for Alliance. The forecast for the week ahead, Emanuel noted, contains some mild to moderate temperatures, though he noted it will take some time for the snow to melt.

“It will be slow to warm with the snow cover having to melt,” Emanuel said. “It will be a quiet week coming up. There won’t be anymore snow for some time.”
