Our friend, J. A. Rodgers, who lives some eight or ten miles south of Alliance, seems to be marked as a victim of misfortunes. During the past year he has had more than his share of serious and expensive sickness. This constituted a long attack of typhoid fever, and the necessity of going to a city hospital for an operation for appendicitis. Prior to that he had lost about $500 worth of cattle from blackleg. Now he finds his eldest daughter afflicted with appendicitis. During the early hours of Monday evening lightning struck his barn during the storm, knocking down all of his horses, which were large fine ones – six in all, we believe. For about fifteen minutes Mr. Rogers and his men held the fire in check, and had nearly succeeded in getting it out, when flames burst from below. About the only grain of consolation that Mr. Rodgers and family are able to derive from the occurrence is the fact none of them were in the structure when the lightning struck. Not more than three minutes before this occurred Mr. Rogers and three of the boys had left the barn.
