Excavating was commenced last Saturday for the new post office and business building to be erected just west of the present Alliance National Bank building and furnished by them complete, representing a total expenditure of more than $10,000.

The bowling team from Crawford will be in this city Wednesday evening for the purpose of meeting the Alliance team in the second contest of the season. The alleys in this city are in exceptionally fine shape and the games will doubtless be very interesting.

Judge Westover put a crimp in the promiscuous handling of bogus checks when he sentenced Charles Vaughn and A. A. McCoy, alias V. B. Lewis, to from one to twenty years in the state penitentiary and assessed an additional fine of $100 against the former. Both men plead guilty to the offense.

Interest in the Alliance Packing Company has been revived by the visit to this city of H. W. McCue, former present of the Corn Belt Packing company of Dubuque, Ia., a man of 22 years’ experience with independent packing concerns. Mr. McCue has intimated to directors of the local company that he is in a position to underwrite $500,000 worth of stock of the local company.

William H. Cowman has filed a petition in district court seeking a divorce from Rose Cowman. They were married at Papillion, Neb., on June 27, 1925. The plaintiff charges extreme cruelty and alleges in the petition that his wife rifled his pockets while he was asleep.

On complaint of neighbors and relatives, George Breckner, was taken to the police station by officers Saturday night to explain the circumstances about the discharge of a shotgun in a room of his home at 415 West Third. The shooting, according to police, occurred during a scuffle and quarrel between Breckner and his 14-year-old son.

The fear that the new viaduct bill passed by the special session of the Nebraska legislature would require Alliance to hold another special election was lifted from the shoulders of the city manager and councilmen Wednesday when they received a copy of the new bill and a letter from Senator Fred Neeland. There will be no election and the state can continue with its plans for the underpass on W 3rd.

Burlington train No. 42, when it left Alliance for Lincoln Thursday night, carried a very special passenger. He was Junior Wright, four-year-old Scottsbluff youngster, who was stricken with infantile paralysis several weeks ago and has been in an iron lung ever since.

The city council met in special session Tuesday evening to study the possibilities of acquiring the Alliance Army Air Base following return of Mayor Walter Jones and Councilman Clyde Sudman from the meeting in Lincoln called last week by Governor Griswold to acquaint municipal authorities with government plans.

An Alliance man Thursday tried unsuccessfully for a long time to get a certain telephone number, then gave up. He decided to use Western Union (WU) instead, send a message and hope for an answer to the question he wanted to ask. Unfortunately WU advised the caller no messengers were on hand Thursday afternoon, and to deliver the message WU would have to use its telephone. The man gave up for good, then.

A pet cat in Alliance recently was afflicted with rabies. That is the information received today by City Manager R. W. Laing in a report from Colorado A. & M. College, Fort Collins. About two weeks ago, Lain said, an Alliance family took its pet cat to a local veterinarian for treatment of an ailment. Extensive test, the college reported, proved the animal had rabies.

Ken Lincoln of Alliance was elected governor Friday at the 10th annual session of the Nebraska Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y model legislature. A record 142 Hi-Y boys from all over the state and 15 Tri-Hi-Y girls, from North Platte and South Omaha, participated in the first day of the two day session.

A crowd estimated at more than 2,000 jammed the 200 block on Box Butte Avenue Saturday noon during a successful “Turkey Day” drawing. Actual drawing of winners’ names by directors of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce started at 12:30, and by an hour and one half later the 111 frozen turkeys had been handed out.

Alliance Jaycees are sponsoring a contest to give away a weaner pig to an Alliance youngster. The pig, which was donated by Alliance farmer Floyd Stone, will be raised and bred by the youngster and two sows from the litter will be returned to the Jaycees.

Tickets are still available for the Twelfth Annual Farmer-Rancher banquet to be held Monday at 6 p.m. at the Community Building. Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Secretary Kay Bandel said Friday over 400 tickets have been given away free of charge to farmers and ranchers, and 600 persons are expected at the feast.

Tempers flaired just a bit during the opening of the Alliance City Council meeting Thursday night after councilman Herbert (Fritz) Sampson questioned city manager Wolfgang Bauer about hiring a police officer to conduct undercover work and then failing to notify the council of his action.

DeAnn M. (Collins) Morse of Alliance was an award winner in the 10th Annual Music City Song Festival competition for songwriters, lyricists, and vocalists. Mrs. Morse earned sixth place out of 385 entries in the Novelty/Miscellaneous category of the Amateur Song division for “The Magic Time Of Christmas,” winning a Tascam Porta 05 studio valued at $500.

Owners of the housing development on 25th Street near Big Horn Avenue have not complied with the city of Alliance and the city is threatening action. City Manager Bret Jones said owners of the Alliance Apartment I, Limited Partnership have not met the city’s building requirements.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe’s special train, annually called the “Santa Train,” will take Santa Claus on a 73-community whistle-stop tour through parts of Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado and South Dakota during Dec. 4-16. The Santa Train will begin its holiday tour from Alliance, where BNSF has a major railroad yard and shops that primarily support Powder River Basin coal operations.

Twelfth Judicial District Judge Brian Silverman sentenced Gerald D., 44, Alliance, to 36 to 60 months in the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services in the 12th Judicial District Court of Box Butte County yesterday. Gerald is charged with second-degree domestic assault, a Class IIIA felony.

U.S. Representative Adrian Smith (R-NE) announced Tuesday his student nominations to the U.S. Service Academies for the class entering the fall of 2011, including one Alliance graduate. Thomas Blanton is a 2009 graduate of Alliance High School. He has been nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

The annual Salvation Army holiday fundraising is scheduled to begin Dec. 1, though bell ringers are still needed. Kettles will be set up through Dec. 22 at K-Mart and Grocery Kart, with ringers doing three-hour shifts – 5-8 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Saturday.
