One of the famous 75 millimeter French shells used in the present conflict in Europe is on display in the Famous window. It was made in this country and ordered shipped to Russia by the French government. The shell is unloaded and can contain either one bullet or schrapnel.

City Manager Kemmish has improved the street lighting system by installing 50 and 60 watt nitrogen filled lamps in place of the 40 and 50 Mazdas. The light has been nearly doubled by the change.

Peter Maleas proprietor of the Alliance Pool Hall was called upon the carpet before Police Judge Roberts yesterday morning to answer to a charge of allowing minors to play in his pool hall. Mr. Maleas admitted guilt to the charge and he was fined $5 and costs. He paid his fine and promised the court that he would abide by the law in the future.

The Farmers State bank at Hemingford failed to open for business this morning, leaving the village without a bank. The action had been generally anticipated for several months and a last effort to save it was made by representatives of the three Alliance banks on Sunday and Monday.

The new and larger Montgomery Ward & Co., retail store in Alliance will be formally opened to the public at 9 o’clock tomorrow morning, Manager P. T. Bunyard announced this morning. The completely remodeled building and a large stock of new merchandise are both in readiness for the opening. The store now occupies the entire building at the corner of Third and Box Butte.

The City of Alliance this week received a brand new Ingersoll-Rand air compressor unit together with some fancy mechanical gadgets which will be of use in fixing sidewalks, curbs and on a lot of other jobs. The city had $82,000 worth of equipment ordered and this new compressor is one of the first new items to arrive.

Members of the Alliance model airplane club are complaining about the mosquitoes at the rodeo grounds when they go out of an evening to fly their model crafts. One member who did a bit of flying Monday night said today that in addition to having to put up with the bites, some of the bugs are so big that the airmen are having trouble telling which are their planes and which the mosquitoes.

Dedication ceremonies and an open house of the new Nebraska Brand Committee Office building were carried out on schedule here this afternoon. The building is located at 411 Niobrara. A delegation from Lincoln including Secretary of State Allen J. Beermann and Lieut. Governor Frank Marsh, landed at the Municipal Airport shortly after noon.

The Alliance Post Office Thursday received four new letter carrier Jeeps to replace the ones currently in use. The new Jeeps differ from the ones now in use in that they have right-hand side controls, six cylinder engines instead of four and catalytic converters.

Burlington Northern Foundation this morning presented the Alliance Child Care Center $60,000 with which to construct a building for the care of working parents’ children. The Alliance Child Care Center, a non-profit organization, was formed lasts December after the Alliance Day Care Center was forced to close because of financial reasons.

The Burlington Northern Foundation has pledged an initial gift of $100,000 toward the Alliance Area Recreation Center (AARC) building project, according to Duane Worley, chairman of the AARC. The project, which has been underway for two years, has as its goal to build and run a multi-program recreational facility in Alliance.

A while back, Greg Garrett wanted to start collecting personalized baseball bats from members of his favorite team, the Oakland A’s. He knew he had to offer a baseball player something of high value before the player would consider a trade. He had designed clay action figurines of some of his favorite players, one of whom is Jose Canseco, to trade for bats.

The Alliance High School and Alliance Middle School marching bands traveled to Hugh Stadium at Colorado State University Saturday at Fort Collins and came home with some awards. AHS took third place overall out of nine teams in Class IIA. Alliance Middle School band students brought home four trophies in their division.

Saturday at the Oktoberfest band competition in Sidney, Alliance High School and Alliance Middle School took several awards during the event. AHS Band Director Dick Rischling said the high school took Class A parade and field awards, as well as overall street and field awards, and the middle school won parade and field awards in their division.

On Monday, people gathered at the fountain in Alliance to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with songs and solidarity. Erica Sanchez, one of the event organizers, said people throughout the state celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 2020, which is why she decided to promote a celebration in Alliance, noting the region has a large population of Native Americans.
