He was born February 4, 1958, in Gordon, NE, to John and Kathryn (Semans) Winter. As a young child he lived in Rushville, NE where he attended Cravath Elementary and graduated from Rushville High School in 1976. While in high school he participated in basketball and was a member of the RATS, which he spent a lot of time cheering on the Rushville Longhorns.

After graduation he worked at the Rushville Coop. While working at the Coop he met Debbie Dragoo. The two united in marriage on November 26, 1977, where they took up residency in the house that Gary had grown up in. To this union they welcomed a son, Barry, in June of 1978, a daughter April in May of 1981, and another son John, in November of 1983.

He worked at the Coop until the early 1990’s as the tire man, then later as the manager. Then he worked for Wellnitz Construction for 10 years. At that time, he opened his own business with his wife, called Winter Custom Design. He continued to work, doing what he loved to do, up until the time of his passing.

He was member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He enjoyed time with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports and teaching them how to cheat at card games. He never won, but always found a way to twist the rules. He enjoyed taking care of his yard and feeding the squirrels. He was also a huge Husker fan! Go Big Red!!
