Law Enforcement Investigating Gun Confiscation Scam

Local law enforcement agencies reported a possible scam in Box Butte County where individuals are allegedly confiscating firearms and other equipment.

A press release from the Alliance Police Department on Monday said the agency, along with the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office were made aware of the situation in which “Federal Boys” or federal agents were taking firearms and other gun-related materials, such as reloading equipment.

APD Chief Philip Lukens noted that the individuals allegedly said they would reimburse people for the equipment confiscated. He said the area law enforcement agencies are working together on the case.

“We have verified with the FBI, no federal agencies are seeking firearms,” said Lukens. “We take these allegations seriously and want to caution the public to always reach out to their local law enforcement agency for verification before ever turning over firearms.”

Lukens suggested the case could be related to organized crime organizations and advised people to contact law enforcement if they are contacted by these individuals.

“Organized crime groups purport themselves in various facets to illegally obtain firearms to further commit crimes,” Lukens said. “It is our sincere desire to keep firearms in the hands of responsible citizens. Should anyone come to your residence or contact you regarding your firearms please contact the police immediately.”
