Lois Meier, 93, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026 with her family by her side at Box Butte General Hospital.
She was born on May 20, 1932 at Carlinville, Illinois to Edward and Lorine (Himstedt) Mahlandt. She was received into God’s Kingdom by Holy Baptism on October 16, 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church. She graduated from Carlinville High School in 1950 and Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1953. She intended to be a missionary nurse and became the school nurse at St. John’s College, Winfield, KS where she enrolled in courses of religion. Here she met her husband. Everette and Lois were married on June 17, 1956. In 1967 they left Kansas and served churches in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wisconsin until 1986 when they made Alliance their retirement home. Everette died on October 30, 1993.
They served as foster parents for Lutheran Social Services and later were blessed with four children. Lois worked at Crestview Manor and Job Corp while living in Chadron. She served in the Hospice program and enjoyed volunteer work through the RSVP program. At Immanuel Lutheran Church she was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and enjoyed quilting for World Relief and attending Bible study.
She is survived by her son, Paul (Denise) Meier of Custer, SD, Ann Meier of Alliance, John (Natalie) Meier of Tonganoxie, KS and Mary Meier of Alliance. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chris Eggink, Mike Eggink, Megan Meier (Dan Higlemeier), Ashlee (Ben) Johnson, Aaron (Megan) Meier, Tremain (Gabriela) Meier and Joleigh Meier and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and his wife, Bill and Kitty Mahlandt and brother John Mahlandt.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, May 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard C. Mueller officiating. Interment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran School.
