Opening round action of the Sidney baseball tourney had a match up between Prep rivals Alliance and Gering. Spartan Jace Jensen had three hits including an inside the park home run as the Peltz Co downed Gering 10 to 5 on Saturday. With the win, the Preps improve to 12 and 5 for the year. Tee Johnson also added three hits. Alliance finished with 10 knocks for the contest. Spartan Esai Trejo went the distance on the mound, going all 5 innings and striking out 4.
RBI doubles by AJ Garcia and Jensen in the first gave the Prep an early lead. Alliance also got first frame knocks by Trejo and Johnson. Gering used a couple of hits and a walk to also get on the board in inning #1. After one, the Peltz Co was up 3 to 1. The Spartans again had success at the plate in the second, tallying 3 more runs. Another rbi double by Jensen along with hits by Trejo, Quinn Ferguson, and Johnson put the Gering deficit at 5. In the home half, Gering scored one and the contest went to the third with the Preps ahead 6 to 2.
Gering won the third. Alliance failed to score while the Preps from Gering tallied one. Walks to Jensen and Trejo in the top of the fourth gave the Peltz Co a chance. Johnson then came thru with an rbi single that made it 7 to 3. Gering plated one in the bottom of the frame. Three more Spartans in their last at bat put the game away. With 2 outs, Cooper Gallas walked and scored on an error by Gering. AJ Garcia also worked a walk that brought up Jensen whose inside the park homer made it 10 to 5. Gering got one back in their last attempt to make the final score Alliance 10 Gering 5
