Keep Alliance Beautiful keeps track of the volume, by weight, of material processed and shipped from our facility. Of course some of what we receive is trash and leaves via the City garbage truck. Other items find their way back into the community to be reused.
The reuse portion of the traditional 3 R’s includes people who take lick tubs in the spring for planters or ask for a pallet or two when we have a surplus. We put back batches of everything from toilet paper rolls to 2 liter bottles for classrooms in a given school year. We’ll save egg cartons and large sheets of cardboard. We still have people stop by for newspaper while packing to move. I’d much rather see our patrons reuse a common item another time before it’s recycled.
Building on this trade we have had several people this summer suggest KAB host a buy/sell/trade/give away day – in other words a flea market. If there is enough interest the event will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26 in the lot north of the recycling center along Second Street between Cheyenne and Laramie. We are welcoming up to 20 participants, they will need to supply their own table and chairs. Paid registrations will be accepted until Sept. 20 or spots are full. Every flea market, farmer’s market and vendor show has its own feel. I hope to hear from vendors that have products made from material that has been repurposed to create something new, such as colorful reusable shopping bags that were pet food bags. Unique, vintage “junk” is welcome. Let’s usher in fall by finding a new home for treasures your friends and neighbors may be interested in.
