Reflections for the Week of Oct. 18-22

Administration:

• Will be meeting with FEMA representatives on October 28th to fill out paperwork associated with the storms of July 9 & 10, 2021.

• Staff is preparing an electronic voting system for use during City Council meetings. A YouTube channel has also been created for future live broadcasts of City Council meetings. Please help us establish rights to live feeds and a customized URL by going to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwGf8Lx5TZBobqsxRsgj76Q and subscribing to our channel. A minimum of 100 subscribers is needed.

BBDC:

• Attended Heartland Expressway Marketing committee meeting Monday. Called into Heartland Expressway Board meeting Thursday.

• Attended Hemingford Chamber Board meeting Tuesday.

• Thursday, spoke to AHS Careers Class for Mrs. Harris – entrepreneurship, funding for business, gathered ideas from students on what they would like to see in town.

• Called into NeDED Housing meeting Friday morning to discuss funding programs coming in 2022.

• Zoomed with Michael Bernier, Advantage Capital, promoting a new Nebraska fund (New Market Tax Credit) that should launch around Thanksgiving – offering $750K-$10M to companies adding jobs in zones similar to the Opportunity Zones (South of 3rd Street/Hwy 2).

HR:

• We have 7 job openings and one new hire pending – More information can be found by visiting www.cityofalliance.net

• Conducting mandatory training for new employees.

• Conducted Western Nebraska Human Resources meeting and State Human Resources meeting.

Electric:

• Completed major maintenance and upgrade of three phase lines at the city well field west of town.

• Assisted with an investigation and removal of equipment from electrical contact.

• Upgraded computer and programming of SCADA/Load management computer.

• We experienced a small outage late afternoon Wednesday October 20th caused by a wet tree limb being blown into a pole and transformer.

Fire:

• Alliance Firefighters participated in the 138th Annual Nebraska State Volunteer Firefighters Annual Conference in Chadron last week. Alliance Firefighters posted colors for the opening ceremonies on Friday.

• Propane Emergencies class started Thursday night. We wrap the class up Friday with live fire exercises in the old KMART parking lot. We have mutual aid partners along with our own department members participating. The Nebraska State Fire Marshal Training Division is instructing the class. This class wouldn’t be able to happen without the sponsorship of WESTCO -We thank them for providing staff members and supplying the propane for tonight’s exercises!

• Five Alliance Firefighters started Hazardous Materials Operations level training Tuesday night in Gering as part of their national Firefighter 1 certification process.

• One position currently open for a Full-Time Fire Apparatus Engineer/EMT.

Police:

• Two dispatchers attended APCO conference in Lincoln for training.

• No burglaries this week!

• Revisions for radio system and 911 rollover integration are under way.

Museum:

• Staff started scheduling for the Christmas Festival.

• The Advisory Board met and discussed upcoming events and activities.

• Staff assisted with research and continued building database with museum records.

• Hosted a book signing for Bernie Burgess, local author from Ashby.

Parks:

• Continued work at the pool, including painting trim and doors and sealing the concrete.

• Winterizing of all irrigation systems is almost completed with only larger park areas remaining.

• Picked up grass piles to make room for snow this winter.

• Picked up tumble weeds at park areas after the high winds.

• Started clean-up of Laing Lake concrete ditch; work will continue next week.

• Staff assisted with four funerals this week.

• Grading and installation of new fill started at the softball complex.

Library:

• Cynthia Horn has been doing a fabulous job promoting all the Halloween programming we are having for our young patrons! She deserves a shout out for all of her efforts!

• The bandana project is still going strong, with us already beginning to sell some for Christmas!

• We have been busy with several fall fundraising projects, details to come.

• The library book club will meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. to discuss “The Sundown Motel”, which is a perfect selection to get you in the mood for Halloween.

RSVP& Senior Center:

• A bingo event was hosted with the WNCC lineman school with a great turnout.

• A new cook was hired at the Senior Center; she will be starting Monday!

• Nutrition Site continues to provide meal delivery and in-center serving.

Golf:

• The weather continued to cooperate providing opportunities for golfers.

• The picker cart was taken to Masek for repairs.

• Preparations are being made to blow out irrigation next week.
