Monte Weisgerber was recently appointed to fill a spot on the Alliance City Council, serving until the council’s first meeting in December.
The position was vacated by Alliance City Councilwoman Mara Andersen, who tendered her resignation from the council effective March 5 as she was expected to move out of state. At the April 2 Alliance City Council meeting, Mayor Earl Jones made a motion to appoint Weisgerber to fill the vacancy left by Andersen, and the council approved it unanimously. Weisgerber was sworn in by City Clerk Shelbi Pitt, and he took his seat on the council.
Pitt told the Alliance Times-Herald in March that voters will have the opportunity to determine who will fill the remaining two years of Andersen’s term during the general election.
Before Andersen’s resignation, voters were expected to elect people to three positions on the Alliance City Council: two four-year terms, currently held by Vice Mayor John McGhehey and Councilman Brian Mischnick, who has not filed for re-election, and a two-year term, which was held by Mayor Mike Dafney until he submitted his resignation. The position is currently held by Mayor Earl Jones, who has not filed for re-election. Now, voters will be given the opportunity to elect people to those three positions, as well as Andersen’s remaining term.
