Reflections for the Week of June 20-24

Public Works:

* Landfill 217 tons of refuse this week.

* Overlay projects still underway, and are making good progress.

* Road maintenance is a major focus this summer with pothole repair and crack sealing underway. Also performing right of way mowing. Grading of alleys, gravel roads, and City owned parking areas underway.

* Roof repair at multiple well locations.

* Jetting of sewer lines is underway as a preventative measure.

* Sanitary survey for Airport water system complete.

* Several small concrete pours underway.

* 593 Transit Riders this week.

Airport:

* FAA inspection started on Tuesday afternoon and concluded Wednesday morning. The inspector was very complimentary of our processes.

Police Admin:

* Multiple meetings held: SHIELD intelligence, CALEA Accreditation, Datalytics, Citizen’s Advisory Board. Quadrant meeting and app submission. Juvenile Justice Meeting, 911 Board Meeting, Trusted Driver Meeting, 30 x 30 Meeting, Next Gen 911 Meeting.

Police Communications/Intelligence:

* Coordinated 702 calls for service.

* Completed 2 report requests.

* 1 firearms permit issued.

Police Operations:

* 5 Child Welfare Investigations.

* 1 DUI, 18 Traffic Stops.

* 3 accidents.

* 0 K9 deployments.

* 205 Building Checks.

* 44 Community Contacts/Business Checks.

* 17 Active Investigations.

Animal Control:

* 39 Animal Calls.

* 7 Dog Impounds. 2 dog currently in the shelter.

* 0 Cat Impounds. 2 cats currently in the shelter.

Code Enforcement:

* 38 Code enforcement issues addressed.

Notable Service:

* Laing Meeting.

* 4 used Tahoes were picked up.

* Movie Night.

Electric:

* Started a three phase rebuild project at 1941 CR 59 north of Lincoln Road.

* We have been removing/replacing numerous poles that were rejected by the pole testing contractor.

* We performed maintenance on several irrigation well transformer banks.

* We continue to repair/replace streetlights.

Fire:

* Chief participated in the ARFF timed response drill and fuel operations/inspection portion of the Annual FAA Part 139 Inspection.

* Concrete work completed for Fire Training Facility. Only minor dirt grooming is needed, then the site is ready for the facility to arrive.

Tourism:

* Carhenge is receiving worldwide attention. Over the last few months, it has been the subject of aerial drone footage, a children’s book called “Eyewitness Wonders of the World”, a podcast, and a video game!

* Podcast went live with Atlas Obscura discussing the creation of Carhenge. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/podcast-carhenge

* Carhenge was also the site of a wedding this week!

* 2022 Bands on the Bricks began June 24 at 6 p.m. and runs for the next five weeks in the downtown.

Museum:

* The museum hosted & helped with the 1972 class reunion and Wrestling reunion.

* Accessed new artifacts.

* Catered the monthly Chamber Huddle.

* Held the monthly Museum Board meeting and welcomed Florence Nickens and Terry Weisgerber to the board.

* We designed several new souvenir t-shirts that are being made locally for the Newberry Gift

Shop.

* Held a tour for the “Questers Group” from Scottsbluff-Gering.

RSVP & Senior Center:

* Continued to provide meals for dine-in and delivery.

* Hosted a pizza party on Monday since the Nutrition site was closed.

Golf:

* Prepared for the Farmer/rancher tournament.

* Junior golf continues to be successful.

* Play continues to be steady.

Library:

* This is our last week of summer reading. The staff is looking forward to the end of the year pool party. Many thanks to all the staff of the swimming pool who make this event possible!

* The staff has created a fun and festive 4th of July display in the library. Come check out Uncle Sam and his table of patriotic books and movies!

* We have been weeding out the DVD collection, so there have been lots of great movies, series, and documentaries placed on the free shelf in the east entrance – come get your next great free find!

* The staff is planning a total remodel of the library’s bookstore beginning next week. There will still be items for sale in the main library until renovation work is finished. The hope is to expand the inventory of the bookstore by offering special and unique items for readers and literature related gifts. Watch for updates!

Parks:

* Painted the concrete pillars at the entrance to Central Park and the sunken gardens.

* Added algaecide to Laing Lake to combat the moss.

* Continued work on the creek at the fountain block at Central Park.

* Prepared for two funerals on Saturday.

* Finished all the weekly mowing in town and at the cemetery.

* Tilled and planted grass seed at the new public works building.

* Mowed the west side of Laing Lake in preparation for the 4th of July.

* Assisted the Water Department with the cleanup of the drainage ditch at Laing Lake.

HR:

* Finalizing online resource guide to assist employees and potential hires to better understand benefits available to them.

* Completing pre-employment conditions for new hires.

* Onboarding 2 new seasonal employees and assisting employees with benefit enrollment.

* Now accepting applications for City Treasurer, Police Officer, Fire Apparatus Engineer/EMT.

BBDC:

* Busy helping Interns with their projects the last couple weeks. Eric Pulver led the ARC in a “Risk Workshop” and will do another in July, where it will be an active scenario played out. Liz and Landon have been working with Brent on mapping recreation sites and modeling the buildings with their fancy software.

* Introduced Interns during Perfect Blend following NCAP’s presentation on Neighbors Helping Neighbors a week ago Tuesday. Also introduced them to City Council this week.

* We are sad to announce two businesses will be closing soon. – Hemingford Dental Clinic and POSH Kids.

* Hosted Highway Commission meeting at Holiday Inn Express.
