Head Girls Wrestling Coach Madeline Girard is eager to see her girls punch their ticket to the state wrestling competition.
“We have a young team, but I do have some returners so I’m hoping that a couple of my seniors can get to State,” said Girard. “Hoping that they come out with some confidence. Just grow together as a team throughout the season.”
She explained that having such a young team is a challenge, but she relies on the upperclassmen to push the younger athletes to do their best. She explained that girls wrestling continues to grow in popularity.
“Well wrestling in general girls wrestling is the highest growing sport in the state, well actually all states,” Girard said. “This year actually yes it did grow, so I’m thinking the popularity and just something different. So I think it’ll continue to grow.”
She hopes the athletes will build self confidence throughout the season, and continue to put in the effort. She explained one of the biggest strengths the squad has is the returning wrestlers.
“My biggest strength I have is the majority of the girls have already been wrestling for me for the last three years,” said Girard. “So there’s the experience and expectations that they know I expect.”
