Tensions were high in Bayard on Monday. Down by one point with one event left, the Hemingford junior high boy’s squad needed to defeat Mitchell in the mile relay to win the overall team title. The Cats did just that. A third place finish helped the Bobcats grabbed the western conference trophy by one point, 116 to 115. Mitchell ended fourth in the final event and settled for the runner up title. Bridgeport was third with 70.5 points. Seven schools took part. Mitchell won the girl’s team title with 132 tallies while Kimball was second at 97. The Lady Cats finished third with 96 points.
Top scorers for the Cats girl’s team were hurdlers Kamryn Haas and Atlee Gasseling. Haas won the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.3 while Gasseling got the gold in the 200 hurdles with a of 32.7. Leading the scoring for the boys was Cooper Gallas who won the 110 hurdles and the 200 hurdle race. Hemingford also got the gold in the 800 thanks to Zane Frost who crossed the line at 2:20. The Cats also got a first place effort in the 400 relay.
