District 47 Legislative Update

The Nebraska Legislature’s first full week commenced on Monday with an additional 171 bills that were introduced as of Friday’s adjournment. While bill introduction is still in progress, Wednesday marked the first day of legislative debate and consideration of measures that carried over from the previous session.

Members of the Legislature also welcomed former State Senator Fred Meyer who has been appointed to represent Legislative District 41. He previously served the district from November 2023 through the end of the term on January 8, 2025.

On Thursday, Governor Jim Pillen delivered his State of the State address, outlining priorities for the Legislature’s short session. He emphasized Nebraska’s economic growth, public safety, and fiscal strength, highlighting partnerships with the Trump administration that have supported infrastructure, agriculture, energy production, and workforce development. The Governor also noted major federal investments, key transportation projects, and Nebraska’s leadership in ethanol and cattle production.

Governor Pillen underscored the state’s diversified economy, population growth, and commitment to remaining open for business. Legislative priorities include low taxes, regulatory and tort reform, and new incentives to attract and retain high-paying jobs. He outlined tax relief efforts, spending reductions, and a balanced budget that reinforces state reserves while returning dollars to taxpayers.

Education was another focus of the address, with emphasis on investments in K–12 education, workforce development, and higher education reforms centered on academic freedom, merit-based scholarships, and opposition to ideological mandates. Additional priorities included protecting farm data privacy, addressing antisemitism, improving school safety, and proposing reforms to Nebraska’s Electoral College system.

The address concluded with a tribute to Nebraska’s veterans and a call for unity, principled leadership, and continued service to strengthen the state’s future.
