Lady Crusaders have a Record Setting Meet in Bayard

St. Agnes’ track record board will need some changes after Monday’s meet in Bayard. Led by seventh grader Penn Vergil, the Lady Crusaders broke or tied 5 records in placing third at the event. Fifteen teams took part with Ogallala winning the boy’s team title and Mitchell placing first for the girls. With 110 points, Ogallala outdistanced Mitchell for first overall. The Tigers were second with 95 tallies while the Hemingford boys took third with 81points. St. Agnes led for most of the day in the girl’s team race but were passed by both Mitchell and Ogallala in the final 2 races. Mitchell got the team trophy with 93 points while OG was the runner up with 89 tallies. The Crusaders were third with 80. SA scored 16 points on the boy’s side which was good for 12th.

Vergil captured four golds for the Academy. She was first in the high jump with a leap of five foot which tied the school record. In the long jump, Vergil was first again with a mark of 16’4 which was another record. Vergil broke her third record in the 400 with a time of 1:04. St. Agnes’ final record came in the 2 mile relay with a time of 11:32 which was good for first. Team members were: Alexis Shelmadine, Kale Hulquist, Aubrey Dudden, and Vergil. Shelmadine also had a new record in winning the pole vault. The 8th grader cleared 9’4 to broke her old record. Top scorer for the Academy boy’s squad came from Tatum Devlin who was sixth in the pole vault. St. Agnes placed in all three of the boy’s relays, taking fourth in both the mile and 2 mile races.
